Artist's Comments

This is my second attempt at processing this IR photo. I think I got it more or less right this time. Unfortunately my camera lets through too much red and not enough IR, so it's impossible to set the correct colour balance in Camera RAW. I had to do a bunch of other stuff, like individual curves on the R, G and B channels, additional colour balancing in PS, and all sorts of stuff like that. The bottom third of the photo had to be brightened because it was in shadow (very dark in IR). I used 'channel mixer' to swap the red and blue channels in the customary way.

By the way, the first (and worse) version I did is here

It shows. Your IR shots are great.

Thanks so much! I had stopped doing them because I wasn't very happy with my processing, but now I seem to have the hang of things, I'll probably do more of them.

Unfortunately I know nothing about IR photography, as its not something within my experience, but I've noticed the very interesting results people seem to get at times. I certainly think this is an improvement over the previous version

You can probably do IR pretty easily with your camera, you just need an R72 screw-in filter (Hoya, Kood, doesn't matter). My camera is actually probably not very good for IR, it seems to need a longer exposure than most.

Oh! Neat. I'm still not really sure what IR is.

There were Cormorants in my National Geographic this morning =D
IR is just infrared. It's just beyond what we can see with our eyes. It would be just past red in the spectrum, if we could see it. You're familiar with the concept of the electromagnetic spectrum, right?

I just use a filter that blocks most visible light and lets infrared through. Not much infrared though, because digital cameras have filters built on top of the sensor to block infrared, so I need to take long exposures.
