Big head slap moment - color correcting photos!

Wed May 20, 2009, 2:12 AM
The inestimably talented Hougaard Malan has brought it to my attention that most of my photos have weird colour casts that I had absolutely not intended! I went round applying the photoshop 'auto colour' command to a load of my images, and damn it, he's right. Cheers Hougaard! I never ended up using the auto colour option before, due to a general prejudice against 'auto' anything.

Have any of the rest of you noticed a dull yellow/orange/brown cast in my images? You probably thought I did it on purpose, right? Nope!

So I will be colour-correcting most of my images, and I may post notification of the updates in the worst cases.

I found a tutorial on customising the 'levels' command to allow fine-tuning of colour correction, very useful indeed! Here it is:

Anyway, Hougaard gets a feature for his latest photo as a reward, although it's worth featuring anyway because it's awesome.

OTHER FEATURES:

Now this is all very mysterious to me. Yes, your pictures do very often have a distinctive colour quality, and yes, I did think it was deliberate - but very few, if any, of your pics look as unnatural in their colours as Mr Malan's...
Oh, and I really hate long-exposure pics of moving water - it's nearly as overdone on dA as gratuitous female nudity ;)

I disagree. Just because something is popular shouldn't automatically make it worthy of hate. There is plenty of beautiful long exposure seascape photography, just as there is plenty of beautiful female nude photography. Theres alot just a shit load of crap stuff which gets too much attention and degrades the worth of the good stuff imo.

I wouldn't disagree with most of that. Popularity in itself certainly doesn't make something worthy of hate, any more than it makes it worth love or respect. And I probably overstated my dislike of long-exposure sea shots. The problem is that there are so many of them that the eye glazes over, making it harder to distinguish the relatively few good ones from the morass of the mediocre or worse. Much the same goes for dA's far-too-common nudes, the vast majority of which are mere smut.
