40,000 poor die; world mourns Michael Jackson

Fri Jun 26, 2009, 2:07 AM
Yup, a celebrity dies, and everyone is freaking out! On the other hand, in the last twenty-four hours, 40,000 people, most of them children, died of starvation and other poverty-related causes. No-one seemed to notice, yet again.

Words cannot suffice to convey how much I detest the phenomenon of celebrity. Do you know how much money Michael Jackson spent on his ridiculous fantasy lifestyle, whilst all these people starved? Nor do I, because I can't count that high!

Sure, it's sad. But not as sad as a SINGLE one of those young lives cut tragically short by poverty. So get a grip.

Honestly give me a break. Go preach somewhere else!

Its true. Welcome to the real world and get over it.

People care about things that are related to them. As much as I feel sad for all the dying children, which is terrible, it doesnt affect me. That sounds terrible but its life. Frankly people have to die, and the worlds population is exploding.

Micheal Jackson produced music which was quite simply groundbreaking. I hate celebrity too, but I love being entertained. End of.

Every death is sad, indeed. But being a largely known artist, Michael Jackson has entered the life of so many and many have grown up with him and his music. His death is not in the least more important than all the others you've mentioned (all are equally sad and unfortunate); however, his death may play a more personal role in the lives of others, and this is what makes it more affecting to some people.

I think you need to get a grip, I agree with what Matthew, and Alex have said. No need to repeat what's already been said.

I missed the part about his spending in the middle:

Michael Jackson earned his money fairly. Becoming rich doesn't mean you owe the world your wealth, nor does it mean that the world is entitled to your money. He has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to charity, yet you are complaining that he spent all of it on "his ridiculous fantasy lifestyle". The world isn't starving and poor because the rich haven't donated every single last dollar.

Umm? I rather think it affects everyone. Think of all the human potential lost due to so much of the world being unable to participate effectively in making the world a better place for us all, because they're too busy melting down scrap lead in their family cooking-pot in order to scrape a living, for example. Consider the huge burden that widespread poverty creates for everone else. Think about all the people who are destroying the environment around them because they don't have any other choice.

I know people have to die, but it's a fairly commonplace belief that it's best if they don't die of starvation or dysentry at the end of a life of desperate privation!

Are you a bit of a Malthusian?

It's Princess Diana all over again. I suppose I don't really care about celebrities, I'm the sort of person who switches off when people start droning on about them.

In the absence of any cogent argument to the contrary, I fail to see why I should be trying to get a grip. Any thoughts?

That's fine if the deaths of the mentioned celebrities don't affect you in the least; however, they do affect the lives of others and I find it a bit impolite to undermine those who are more emotionally involved with the losses.

I'm not saying that rich people should donate everything immediately to the poor. I think everyone in the world deserves a reasonable level of wealth and well-being. I don't think we should all live in mud huts!

It is a fact, however, that Jackson spent untold riches on his own personal amusement park and fantasy land, not to mention a load of other utterly unnecessary and vastly expensive crap. Am I the only one who thinks that's the teensiest bit obscenely profligate and egotistical?

Incidentally, if I'm not allowed to ';preach' in my own journal, than where am I allowed to?
