Irrationality and ignorance

Mon Jul 6, 2009, 7:07 AM
I have noticed something here on DA, but I'm pretty sure it applies to all public internet forums (except perhaps scientific ones).

Whenever anyone posts a journal or poll regarding religion, superstition or something similar (basically I'm talking about beliefs held without, or in spite of, evidence), and I post my science-based point of view, I almost invariably become the victim of personal attack by someone or other, or sometimes several people!

Even if I am not immediately attacked, discussions almost always quickly degenerate into me being called a Nazi or some such, and/or told I am insufferably rude/ignorant/unpleasant/fond of killing babies.

These are quite amazing fantasies. I thank the non-existent gods of impersonal physical laws that I get to be me, and not them!

yea i've noticed that too. It's kinda sad that most of those threads end up being argument threads. And a lot of people's answers are simple insults, not even supported by their own points of views. Just short, rude replies.

I've noticed some people get like that on forums and message boards. Two particular problems I've noticed with these sort of things:
1. People see something that you've said as a personal challenge/insult when you disagree with them or present a differing opinion. In many cases I've seen, someone will just dig up some fact/story that backs up their point and smugly retire. When belief or supertition are involved, this isn't always posible, so people can react badly.
2. Some people forget the rather public nature of the internet and get stupidly upset when someone joins in who they wouldn't have invited if it were a more private, members only affair. I bet some of these are the same sort of morons who shout stuff across a crowded room then get upset that some other than the person they were shouting to hears it.

Honestly and you wonder why you are attacked with statements like that? Irony, I think you can smell what it's cooking. Respect, as I recently wrote, tact, and tolerance. Making a sweeping statement like that as you just did, makes you look rather bad and intolerant of others and their beliefs around you.

Yes.. if you believe strongly in something, it seems to be impossible to even think about different explanations for what you feel and see.
But I'm studying philosophy and I was quite surprised to see that many students combine it with the study of religion. They are well capable of discussing without being rude...
Maybe it's because on internet forums listening and trying to understand each other's opinion is more difficult than in real life. People read what someone wrote and write their own opinion below.
"Social rules" (I'm lacking of a better word) should exist everywhere. But in the internet they are less evident and therefore easier to neglect :(

(hope you understand my English)

Erm, what? Am I not allowed to say I'm glad to be me? Not allowed to say that I'm not the kind of person to make a personal attack on someone just because we disagree?

To be honest Graeme, I really cant sympathise with you here.

Whilst I also am athiest I think religion does a lot of good for many people. Lets be honest here, if you post on a forum like this about your strong opposition to religion you are going to upset people. I mean really what is the point anyway? It's not like you can change their mind.
:iconserene-topaz:
When it comes to religion, unless you want to get into an argument, it's best not to say anything if you don't agree. Just respect the persons belief and don't post anything. They want the same amount of respect for their opinion as you do yours.
:iconkimonokraken:
That's the thing. I don't want any respect for my opinion. I think that people should be respected, but not opinions. Opinions should be open to discussion.

You literally said that anyone whom believes in God is having a fantasy. Do you understand that? Stop and think for one second and ask yourself how that comes across to others. There are MUCH better ways of making a point and getting it across without having to resort saying such a thing. You don't think people who believe in God would find that offensive? You really kind of put the flame bait out there with that statement, let alone just crapped on everyone's head who believes in a higher power.

Walking contradiction?

*Post journal about how I am flamed
*Post reply how I don't believe in respecting people's opinions.

I think you just answered everything with that comment there.
